VULNERABILITY 2010
Painting, like any process that involves remaking oneself, requires risk. And risk makes us vulnerable. In this group of paintings my intention is to explore vulnerability both as a concept and as an experience. My engagement in the relationship between what I am painting (the content) and what is feels like to paint (the process) is critical to how I approach my work. I am grateful for this fact. It brings meaning to my life.
In my painting process, there is an essential longed for moment of surrender. I believe that vulnerability is at the heart of this letting go and I am drawn to gestures, sometimes frail, often ambiguous, that reflect this always human condition.
"The friends that have it I do it wrong
Whenever I remake a song
Should know what issue is at stake,
It is myself that I remake."
- W.B. Yeats
